Grateful - revealed!

It was a clear, cold night, the stars shining brightly overhead, Oakland buzzing with the energy of a throng of art / music / culture / hipster enthusiasts roaming the streets in search of inspiration, excitement, intellectual challenge, discovery and fun.  On the corner of 18th and San Pablo, a piano store sat, lit with soft gold tones, inviting people to come hear the music.  My music!

And what a night it was!!  The event was sold out!  Filled to capacity and then some.  I am so utterly humbled and grateful for all of the people who shared their love and support with me at my EP release concert.  Given everything taking place in the neighborhood, easy parking was nearly impossible, yet people still came and supported my work.  The energy of the crowd was beautiful, and I offered my heart through my music in gratitude.

Special thanks to the people who helped me in this journey, and to those who I saw and spoke to at the event, including my sweetheart, both of my parents, my sister and her kids, my other siblings, most of my extended family members on both sides of the family, my students, mentors, friends, neighbors, and fans.  You all made last night one of the most memorable in my life.  I am GRATEFUL.

Arranging

When creating a musical set list (an agenda for a live performance), if performing music that the audience will be familiar with, one has to consider: do I choose to perform the chosen songs in a manner that reflects the original recording or do I change the style / key / meter / instrumentation, etc? I've chosen 6 cover tunes for my upcoming show at Piedmont Piano (shameless plug: Dec 7 @ 8pm - don't miss it!! Victoria Theodore - Grateful EP Release Concert), including a Stevie Wonder tune that I infused with a little Bach flavor! I'm really happy with my arrangements, but wow! It was more work than I anticipated. Now they're done and it's time for me to focus on practicing and being performance ready. So, on that note, I log off of the social networks...again...and get to the keyboard as I sit in my quiet little hotel room. I say it all the time, offering it as a suggestion to you, my readers, but also to myself: Carpe Diem!

– "Grateful" by Victoria Theodore & Amy Levine

Hello friends!

At long last, my first compilation of original music has arrived!  “Grateful” is a 6-song preview (an EP in music business terms) of my upcoming full length CD, featuring a musical hybrid of jazz, pop and R&B, reflecting my training as a classical pianist.  I'm having a release party and celebration at Piedmont Piano on December 7.  I hope to see you there!

Writing success

I completed another song with a couple of songwriters today!  Yay!  This one is kind of a bossa nova, but with some alterations.  My daily writing practice appears to be paying off, because the lyrics flowed rather easily.  We all felt like we were in the creative flow and loved what we did.  What a great feeling!

Strategy

So, I have the new EP, and I love it!  A few people have gotten their hands on it (thanks to coming to my gig Saturday night!).  I'll be making it available soon.  But first, I have to set up more gigs, figure out the where, the how, the why, blah blah blah.  Business.  Yes, music is a business.  Anyway, just taking a few minutes to check in.  So much to do...so little time....

Almost...really...I really mean it!

It's almost ready!  I just delivered the master CD to the CD manufacturer.  Yay!!  My first EP (a collection of 6 songs, less than a full length CD, often used as an introduction to a new artist) is now out of my hands and being duplicated.  I'm so proud of the music and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.  Many thanks to my collaborators: Red Spider MultimediaBradley James Falconer for R00KAmy LevineMitchell WilcoxWolf Wein for Wolf Track Audio and everyone who played roles in this effort.

I had no idea how much effort goes into the full process of releasing a CD.  Yes, I have a Christmas CD (which, since the season is approaching, you can download here: Victoria Theodore: Christmas), but that was different because it wasn't original music.  I started this process over a year ago in earnest, and I'm looking forward to holding the tangible product in my hands.  But even more, I'm looking forward to performing on a regular basis again.

Back in April, when I started working with my co-producer, Brad, I decided that it didn't make sense to book (or take) any more local gigs without having a product to sell.  So, I cut way way way back in local performing so I could focus.  Not an easy task for a music addict like me, but I found it a necessary evil.  Of course, I made sure to always be available for Stevie Wonder gigs (I'm not insane, after all!), but otherwise, I really stepped back.  I'm so ready to start playing again!  Now that I have my own EP, I also look forward to performing MY music!!  Yay!

So, with that stated, I'm performing with Kymberly Jackson on Saturday, November 3 in Oakland!  And, yes, you'll be able to buy my EP at the show!  Kymberly always puts on a great show and has a loyal following, so be sure to get your tickets early!

CDs, Gigs, etc.

CD???  Nope, not yet.  It's close though!  I know I've been saying that for weeks...months even.  But really, for real really this time...really!  Close.  All the ducks are lining up, the eggs gathering in a basket, the cats being herded, etc!  Until then, you can come hear me perform with Kymberly Jackson at 57th Street Gallery on November 3.  My goal is to have CDs for you to purchase at the show.  I'm setting my intention, gathering my momentum, polishing my optimism and stepping forward in faith!

Happy weekend, beauties...

A Quickie...

If it's brief, does it count?

Last week, I committed to writing my blog on a more regular basis.  Today was a day filled with tasks, meeting with old friends from afar, more tasks, making dog food (I need to write a blog devoted just to that new task), watching the debate while I tried (oh how I try) to catch up with email.  And now, as I sit down to eat my dinner (salad with romaine and butter lettuce, an organic tomato from my uncle's garden, baby carrots and 1/2 avocado in a sesame vinaigrette, and a side of roasted butternut squash with apple and almonds), I remember my commitment.  So, here I am, blogging while hungry.  And here I go, to eat my dinner!  Until next time, my darlings...

Writing Habit

So, I've taken up this new task of waking up at 7am every morning (awfully difficult for a vampire musician like myself) and spending 30 minutes writing.  The purpose is to free my creative mind and hope that it will yield a bounty of compositions, essays, screenplays, choreography, recipes, cures for infectious disease, the secret of the Universe, etc.  I have yet to confirm that it's a valid form of creative impetus, but I suppose time will tell.  Speaking of time: it's time to get back to practice for my wedding gig tomorrow evening.  I have a few gigs coming up in November, and I will definitely let you all know about those in time.  For now, I'm keeping to my other new task (which I often fail miserably at meeting) of avoiding going online except for 2 distinct time periods per week - now being one of those times...although it was really supposed to take place this morning.  Oops!

I wish you a lovely weekend!

Blessings & Music, my dears!

Blogging...RESTART!

Hello my beautiful friends!  It's been a long while since I've posted anything in my blog.  I owe you all some beautifully written prose and highly artful photos of myself and my incredible journeys this year.  That's coming soon.  For now, I just want to reestablish the habit of writing at least once a week. It's now on my calendar twice per week (if I schedule it ambitiously, maybe I can meet the bare minimum goal???  Maybe...), and I'm going to do everything I can do to keep that schedule!  There's soooo much to share with you, from my trip to perform for the Queen, travel to Portugal, Turkey and even last year's trip to Brazil (yes, I've been that terrible of a blogger...sigh...).

Anyway, my thoughts today lead to me to express gratitude for having such a wonderful team on board for my 6 song EP!  My co-writers, the musicians, the engineers, my co-producer, my family, boyfriend, friends, the dogs, everyone involved has been so supportive, loving, energetic, willing to go the extra mile, helping in innumerable ways.  The EP is a true expression of my gratitude.  Music coming soon.... : >

Time to focus!

Hello my friends,

It's again that time: I have to shut down my online presence so that I can focus on my project.  Stage one is to complete a demo CD and use that for fundraising.  It's going to take a huge chunk of money to pay for production, recording, mastering, manufacturing, marketing, merchandising, promotion, etc.  So, my strategy is to ave a demo CD that I can sell at gig to start my financing efforts.  So, until I finish that demo CD, I will not be checking email, invitations, comments, updates, or anything.  My goal is to have it completed by July 21.  I look forward to sharing my music with you.  This will be a demo, but I'm still aiming to make it something I'll be proud of.  Once the demo CD is complete, I'll upload my blog about my amazing trip to the UK to play for the Queen and the dozens of incredible celebrity photos.  Happy Summer everyone!!  I love you all xoxoxo

PS If you want to book me for a gig, please visit my website: www.vtmusicworks.com

April is ended. May is here. Project? Not yet...

I've been spending much of my time practicing and composing new music.  I'm determined to complete and release my first non-seasonal musical product by my birthday, this September.  I don't want to whine.  I don't want to complain, especially when it comes to things fully in my control.  "Don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good", my beloved tells me.  Easier said than done.  Tomorrow is May 1.  May 1!!!  I have several songs written, many of those arranged, but I still want to write a few more.  The writing will get done, but it's the timeframe I struggle with.  I just never seem to have enough time.  Awwww, poor me...

I've made major changes to my schedule (not so many gigs, not going to hear live music as much as I'd like to, few movies, etc.) but still, day after day passes and I don't get everything done I'd like to. It seems to take me forever to finish this project! Time management is clearly my achilles heel...well, one of many weak heels...

I'm a perfectionist by nature, so part of the issue may be my own tendency to be overly critical, but I know it's also a certain nervousness about "will it be good enough" and the underlying (though to a lesser extent - I think...) "am I good enough".  I really love the new songs and am excited about letting everyone hear them, and especially about performing them live.  Enough of my navel gazing...time to get back to the piano and back to writing!

A poem:

"The world's favorite season is the spring.
All things seem possible in May."
-  Edwin Way Teale

I'll take that as my cue and proclaim that all things are possible in May!  I will finish the new songs I worked on last week!  I will finish arranging 2 tunes for VERY patient clients!  I will submit my ideas for a new collaborative effort!  Yes!!

I have a few performances coming up.  I hope to see you soon!  But don't look for me online.  I'm shutting down again.

Upcoming Stevie Wonder Show - August 2012

I just saw online that Stevie Wonder is going to perform at this year's Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, August 10 to 12th.  Stevie is one of the great performers  of our time, and if you haven't had the chance to see him in concert, you should definitely go.

Before any of you ask, I can not get comp tickets for anyone.  If you would like to see the concert, please go to Tickets. The least expensive $165 tickets have already sold out and the next least expensive are almost gone at $195. Good luck and I hope to see you from the stage!

Perth, Jakarta and Cancun: Part 3

Cancun

Ok, it was really Playa del Carmen, and it was a private birthday party for a very wealthy man and his daughter. The celebration was to last for 4 days and included several major artists and many major celebrities on the guest list.  Even though I was there in the capacity of employee, I felt like an invited guest, given that our accommodations were in a beautiful eco resort: Sandos.  I loved it!!!  I just wish I could have stayed for another 2 weeks!  The entire premise of the resort is conservation, which is just a way of being for me.  (Speaking of which, I want to buy a fuel efficient, small, used car....anyone selling??  I digress...back to my story).  I flew direct from San Francisco to Cancun (yay!) and met up with the rest of the band at the airport.  This was my first trip to Mexico, so I was really excited to be there and for the opportunity to finally practice speaking Spanish!  (Yes, I live in California, and yes, it's pathetic that I don't practice my Spanish more often, but its just too easy to speak English all the time at home.)  I told everyone at the resort that I wanted to speak Spanish and asked them to not speak to me in English.  It was tough, but for the most part, I did ok!

 Sandos
My room, with a swan made from a towel.  Very creative!

We arrived at the resort in the early evening and after dropping my bags in my room, I went for a walk on the exquisite grounds.  I ran into a couple of the crew guys and joined them for dinner at the Mediterranean restaurant (none of us could get into the Mexican restaurant, as it was constantly booked for private events).  I had grilled tuna, mashed potatoes and portabello mushrooms.  It was quite tasty.

As I walked back to my room, I noticed the scurrying of little feet.  No, these weren't cats or dogs...they were RACCOONS!!  My immediate response to seeing a gaze of raccoons was to become aware of my impending panic, stay calm, breathe deeply and rush in a different direction.  However, these raccoons were clearly not violent like the raccoons back home: they were milling around the outdoor dining tables, sometimes waiting patiently for food scraps and sometimes actually alighting onto the tables to pick from abandoned plates.  I'd never seen anything like it.  After about 30 minutes of feeling jumpy, I finally relaxed and joined my band mates in the lounge area for a bit of late night respite and laughter.

The next morning, I woke up at 7:30 so that I could make it to the 8am yoga class.  I'd assumed it would be taking place in the spa/gym, but no!  The group of students gathered at the spa/gym and then followed a focused, intense man name Juan Carlos to an outdoor spot.  At first I was walking near the end of the line, but I prefer a quicker pace, so I trotted ahead and walked next to Juan Carlos, who struck up a conversation with me - en Español!  After inquiring about my yoga experience, he asked me to position my mat at the front of class to serve as an example for the less experienced students (this always happens in yoga classes, and I'm happy to be in front - given that I'm a bit of an exhibitionist and have practiced yoga for 16+ years).

Me and Juan Carlos

Juan Carlos led an international group (folks from the United States, Spain, Germany and Brazil) to a tree covered deck, above a creek.  He spoke in Spanish and English and taught a tough vinyasa class.  Tough enough that 3 days later, I was still sore!  I loved it!  Being outdoors, under the trees, watching the birds fly by, singing their songs, and the turtles swimming in the water under the deck.  Breathtaking!  This was one of my all time favorite yoga classes.  It was tough to get up that early, but I'm so glad that I did.  I left class and headed to the internet cafe (the only spot to obtain free internet - remember, I'm frugal!) and this is the view I had while making my free international phone calls:
Not too shabby, eh?

I left the internet cafe and on my way to my room, I met my new friend, the iguana:

Look at that color!  When I approached, another woman was holding the reptile and I couldn't resist!  I finally said goodbye to my iguana friend, and headed back to shower and get dressed.  On my way to brunch, I came across these beautiful birds.

 Chatty, they were!

We all gathered in the lobby and went to sound check. On the day that Stevie performed, Santana, Enrique Iglesias and an amazing Flamenco troupe performed.  We performed in a tent that had been converted to look like a movie set.  It was beautiful!

After sound check, I joined Judith and met her friends from the Iglesias band and Robbie Williams band.  They were staying at the same hotel as the Santana band, where I ran into my friends Karl and Tony!  I wasn't able to hear them perform, but I was glad to be able to catch up with them.

Judith, Laura, Nayanna, Joe and I all went downtown for dinner and window shopping.  I wanted to have some authentic Mexican food while I was in Mexico, dammit!  We came across a restaurant that featured traditional Mayan recipes.  Winner! Joe and I shared the sampler plate, which had some very yummy tamale and ceviche offerings.  I love tamales, but it's not easy to find them without pork.  This restaurant had vegetarian tamales!  I was very happy...

Our call time for the show wasn't until 11pm, so there was plenty of time for me to do show prep (practice, hair, make up, etc.)  At the venue, everything was running an hour behind, so a group of us joined in an impromptu jam session with members of the Flamenco troupe.  We had our own party!

After the show, several celebrities came backstage to meet with Stevie (of course, after all, even the biggest stars turn into fans when we're talking about Stevie Wonder!), and I had the chance to ask Leonardo DiCaprio for a photo.  I'd just watched him perform in J. Edgar, so I was especially excited to meet and take a photo with him.  Very cool!

We didn't go on stage until nearly 2:40am, and by the time we finished and returned to our resort, the sun was nearly rising.  So, I took advantage of the opportunity to watch the sunrise.  I'd seen the sunrise once before, in Switzerland, the sun greeting me over the mountains and spilling across Lake Luzern.  But this was different. It was relatively warm, and I was on the beach.  Ah...

Later in the day, I went for a dip in the Gulf of Mexico:

Gracias por llevarme a Cancún, Stevie! Mi primer viaje a México fue mágico!  (Ok, I cheated with translating software...I'm not fluent...yet!)

Perth, Jakarta and Cancun: Part 2

Jakarta

We packed up and flew to Jakarta via Bali on a rainy morning after the show in Western Australia.  I never can stay awake on an airplane (dry air combined with engine hum, I suppose is the reason), so I slept nearly the entire flight.  Despite the fact that we were going to fly on the same plane, and that our layover was only 45 minutes, we were instructed to deplane and hang out in the airport.  So, I've technically been to Bali...but not really.

 Roman sleeping soundly

Bali Airport

We arrived in Jakarta just in time to have a passport fiasco.  Apparently, some musicians were selected for an extended passport review and our first group were forced to sit at the airport for 4 hours while being "processed".  The second group were allowed to pass unencumbered and we ended up all riding to the hotel together...at 2am!  And then we had a 7am call for sound check.  No complaining...no complaining...no complaining! lol

Jarkarta Airport

I managed to find a few moments to watch George Duke perform at the Java Jazz Festival, but missed all of the jam sessions, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, and Bobby McFerrin.  Oh well.  No complaining...no complaining...no complaining! lol

 Our sound check

After sound check, I went back to the hotel for dinner.  Another group of people were celebrating a child's birthday, and this person was dressed as a character, walking around greeting random diners.  The character was friendly, but a little creepy too.

Our show went well again, but my brain was definitely fried by the time Stevie launched into Giant Steps.  I don't drink caffeine or take any stimulants, so when fatigue hits me, I really feel it!  After the show, we all gathered for a lovely meal with our esteemed employer, and then headed to the hotel to pack for our early morning flights.

Driving to the airport, heading home, passing the mall I didn't have time to shop in...No complaining...no complaining...no complaining! lol

Perth, Jakarta and Cancun: Part 1

I've been around the globe again with Steveland over the past couple of weeks.  As usual with one-off concerts, there wasn't much time for sight-seeing or relaxing, but I took full opportunity to see what I could.

The flights to Australia were brutal on everyone: multiple stops, long layovers and endless time zone changes.  By the time I went to bed in Western Australia, 48 hours had elapsed since leaving my house.  Literally.  But I say that with the caveat that I do have the best job on the planet, so a little fatigue is no reason for whining or complaining!

Stevie was booked to perform at the Sandalford Winery in the Swan Valley / Margaret River area of Western Australia. Once we landed in Perth, we were ferried via bus for 3 hours to a private resort where we were assigned to houses in 3s.  My housemates were LaNesha and Judith.  We each had our own bathrooms and the house was large enough to allow each of us to maintain our privacy.  The house was decked out with a modern kitchen, a hip living and dining area and lovely patio and backyard.  I wanted to stay there for a month and work on music!  All of us were longing for that dream...ah...

Yeah, I could call that home, at least for a while!

We arrived too late in the evening to do anything besides eat and star gaze, but the next morning, we all boarded a bus to take a quick tour of the Margaret River region, Yallingup Beach (Indian Ocean) and a petting zoo. The ocean (Yallingup Bay) is gorgeous!

At the petting zoo, we were greeted by a sweet pair of dogs, and led through a menagerie of animals, most of which were very cute.

Ok, these hogs were not cute!  I'd never been this close to a hog and not only do they smell terrible, they're far bigger than I could have ever imagined!  A pet pig?  Not for me...

The show went very well, the audience was enthusiastic, but I barely remember anything because my brain still hadn't caught up to my body!  Jet lag is crazy...
